Chapter Eleven

Perhaps asking Damek for full transparency might not have been the best plan I could have devised. But it was not as though I were asking a leopard to change its spots. I retained high hopes that this approach would cause him take our training seriously. As I saw it, the only way to achieve his trust was by letting him know what I expected from him at the outset.

Perhaps Rachel would not be happy with me for admitting to him how worried we were that he could turn against us. And indeed, I would be very sorry if she held it against me because I quite liked her. Behind that demure facade was an undeniably strong woman who had endured and transcended a despicable horror. I was therefore quite certain that she would give me hell if she thought I was being too hard on her child.

But so be it. I do not and have never believed that children, least of all moody teenagers, should be coddled. Truth and respect are not always kind, coming as they do with razors and barbs that strip away the pretty lies that people foolishly believe in order to make their lives bearable. But at least with the truth, you always know where you stand.

I watched Damek from the corner of my eye as he looked down and concentrated. I was trying to teach him how to sense the world around him solely with his ears, and not to rely upon his sight. It was a tricky skill that provided a solid foundation for the others, so it usually took a little bit of time.

“Trust your instincts, Damek,” I advised him. “There is a reason why it is called gut instinct, as that is the spot you will feel it most. Because it rarely fails, you must learn to rely upon it. Your body is much more attuned to external perils than your conscious mind. Therefore, let the former tell you when there is imminent danger. In this way, you focus on your instincts rather than your mind’s overwhelming fears.”

Much to my pleasant surprise, Damek was doing exceptionally well with this lesson despite his inexperience. I had materialized throughout various spots in the room and even thrown a few glass globes at him. (The glass globes had been magicked by Lady Macbeth herself for this express purpose). A bit cruder than Bryn’s discs, yes, but her training devices worked best in an outdoor space.

In every instance, he either dodged or caught the offending projectile that was aimed at him. He even threw it back and came close to hitting me on two occasions. Clearly, he possessed raw talent that needed to be molded by someone as cultured and refined as myself. But I was thankful to whatever divine power brought him into my orbit that the talent was there. I was more than glad to polish this diamond in the rough until it shined with a magnificence to rival the sun itself.

Once I had exhausted my supply of globes, I decided to take a more direct approach.
